Friday 16.1, 11:00-16:00

Contents and aims: Advanced time series analysis for environmental and climate data course is designed to give modern statistical methods using routines written in Matlab. The course covers extraction of signals from noisy backgrounds: significance testing, choice of noise background, Monte Carlo methods. Classical methods: EOF and wavelet transforms. Causality: wavelet coherence, wavelet lag regression, Granger causality. Quasi-periodic signals: Singular spectrum analysis, non-linear methods (method of delays, embedding dimension), concepts of chaos. The aim of the course is to provide tools that the students can use on their own data. Assumes students are able to use Matlab.
Working methods and work load: 12 hours lectures, student exercise on own data with Matlab software. Evaluation by written project work based on student’s own data analysis.
Target Group: Master’s students all disciplines; numerical disciplines at undergraduate level
Study materials: Handouts, Matlab programs, Numerical Recipes, CUP; The Nature of Numerical Modeling by N. Gershenfeld, CUP, 1999.
Language: English.
Certificate: The participants will get a certificate of their participation in the course.
Registrations: By January 9th to Johanna Issakainen by e-mail: johanna.issakainen(at)oulu.fi or by phone: 08-537 6202.
Fee: The course is free of charge.
