Northern and Environmental Issues
A CALL FOR GRANT APPLICATIONS 2009

 


Northern and Environmental Issues, a focus of the University of Oulu, is coordinated by the Thule Institute (http://thule.oulu.fi/englanti/). By this call, the following grants are announced to be applied:

  • Thule doctoral education grants
  • Oulanka Foundation grants 2009
  • Research station grants

Thule doctoral education grants

Personal working and travel grants are available for all students aiming at doctoral degree at the University of Oulu. The grants are for full time research and studies. Some grants will also be available for international activities. Applications are primarily expected from students at the final stage of their doctoral studies. Either the thesis or the studies should include multidisciplinary elements and be connected to northern and environmental issues. Studies which integrate NorNet cooperation (http://www.nornet.oulu.fi/english/) and the research programs of the Northern and Environmental issues (Global Change in the North, Northern Land Use and Land Cover, Circumpolar Health and Wellbeing) are particularly encouraged. The working grants are to be paid during 2009.

Grants are available for

  • Personal research grant for full-time working on doctoral thesis; either for intensive or final revision phase (up to 6 months; requires levave from work)
  • International activities for working period in a foreign university or research institute during the intensive working phase of doctoral thesis
  • Travel grants for active participation in international conferences (program, abstract and acceptance letter required)

Oulanka Foundation grants 2009

Oulanka Foundation is supporting research, which deals with Kuusamo area and which are carried out at the Oulanka research station. The Rector of the University of Oulu will deliver, after consulting the support group of the Oulanka research station, the grants for research or theses.

Research station grants

Personal research station grants for the students of the University of Oulu are available for theses research that are carried out at the research stations and/or makes use of long-term environmental observation data sets (LTSER, Long Term Socio-Ecological Research, Northern LTSER). Applications for studies making use of the longterm data series at the research stations of Värriö and Oulanka are especially encouraged but other applications related to the research stations activities and long-term socio-ecological environmental research general are also welcome.

Application form and delivery of the applications

Electronic applications including appendices should be sent as pdf or word files to the e-mail address thule at oulu.fi. The applications should be received by the recipient no later than April 14, 2009.

Electronic applications are preferred, but the applications may also be as paper copies, in which case they should be send to the address ‘Apuraha’, Thule Institute, Oulun yliopisto, PL 7300, 90014 OULUN YLIOPISTO or using internal mailing address THULE. The applications should be received by the recipient no later than April 14, 2009 at 16.00.

Applications received overdue will not be considered.

The total amount of grants will be approximately 80 000 euros
