- Two-day
seminar Human-Environment Relations in the North
The
FiDiPro research group welcomes graduate and master students to attend
the two-day seminar Human-Environment Relations in the North.
The seminar
focuses on developing and presenting innovative perspectives on human-environment
relations in the circumpolar North, especially within a context of contemporary
environmental changes which affect livelihoods, human engagement with
the environment, resource use and development at multiple and interrelated
levels.
Keynote speakers are well-known specialists representing various fields
such as anthropology, sociology and geography, and will address the
main theme of the seminar via four subthemes: 1) People, Energy and
Resources, 2) Climate, Livelihoods and Tourism, 3) Rivers and Watersheds
and 4) People, Predators and Pests. Other presenters of the seminar
represent several linking research projects from Finland and Canada.
The seminar is free of charge. Registration by email is, however, required.
By registration, please indicate if you wish to receive a certificate
of attendance to apply for credits from your faculty/department. For
more information, see http://thule.oulu.fi/englanti/research/humanenvironmentseminar.html
or contact Hannah Strauss or Kaarina Tervo (email: firstname.surname@oulu.fi).

- Why
North? Which North?
Multidisciplinary seminar on research in and of the North
Lasaretti
Conference Center, Merikoski Hall, Oulu on 7th to 8th February 2008
Organizer Thule Institute
It is both
important and somewhat trendy to do research in or of the North. But
why? As the concept of the North is essentially relative: which North?
These intentionally provocative questions are approached in this seminar
philosophically, theoretically, empirically, ethically and even methodologically.
The purpose of the seminar was to bring together insights of North from
various disciplines. The aim was to converge across disciplines in order
to critically unpack, demystify and deconstruct the concept of the North.
See Announcement and Detailed
program (pdf files).
